Creating PDF Files
in Distiller and Acrobat
Only a limited number of programs have a PDFMaker installed with
Acrobat 9, and not all programs have internal PDF-generating options for
export. In many applications—illustration programs, for example—you
can generate other le formats that can then be processed using Acrobat
Distiller 9. Distiller is a separate program installed with the Acrobat 9
installation process and is used to convert EPS (Encapsulated PostScript),
PS (PostScript), and a specialized Windows format called PRN to the PDF
format. You can use either PS or PRN les in Distiller. The PS le format
uses the PostScript language. Some programs produce PRN les instead
of PS les; other programs generate PRN les if you choose Print to File
as a printing option. Both le formats are based on the printer drivers
installed on your computer.
Most programs allow printing, and if you can print a le, you can create
a PDF le using the Adobe PDF printer (read how in #9, “Printing with the
Adobe PDF Printer”). In addition to the les you may have handy on your
hard drive, Acrobat converts content from other sources, including scan-
ners, Web pages, your system clipboard—or starts from a blank page.
Many common le types can be converted to PDF from within Acrobat.
In Acrobat 9 you can combine les of dierent types, convert them all to
PDF, and either merge them into a single PDF le or produce a PDF Port-
folio, which collects the contents and combines them as subsets of a new
interface document (read about PDF Portfolios in Chapter 4, “Producing
a PDF Portfolio”).
