6.2 Rate Limiter
The device allows you to limit the traffic on the ports in order to help provide
reliable operation even with a large traffic volume. If the traffic on a port
exceeds the traffic value entered, the device discards the excess traffic on
this port.
The rate limiter function operates exclusively on layer 2, and is used to limit
the effects of storms of data packets that flood the device (typically
Broadcasts).
The rate limiter function ignores protocol information on higher levels, such
as IP or TCP.
In this dialog, you enable the "Rate Limiter" function. The threshold value
specifies the maximum amount of traffic the port receives. If the traffic on this
port exceeds the threshold value, the device discards the excess traffic on
this port.
Parameters Meaning
Port Displays the number of the device port to which the table entry relates.
Threshold Unit Specifies the unit for the threshold value:
Possible values:
"percent" (default setting)
Enter the threshold value as a percentage of the data rate of the port.
"pps"
Enter the threshold value in data packets per second.
Broadcast Mode Activates/deactivates the rate limiter function for received broadcast data
packets.
Possible values:
unmarked
(default setting)
marked
If the threshold value is exceeded, the device discards the excess
broadcast data packets on this port.
