5.4 CLEANING
Just like any other milking installation, clean and hygienic operation is essential for the robot in order to produce
high quality milk. The milking robot frequently starts an automatic cleaning, varying from rinsing of the teat cup
tops to an acid based or detergent based cleaning. Even if the milking robot is not used for a longer period, the
system is rinsed with water. After milking of a cow whose milk was separated, the milking installation is always
rinsed with water. In this way, the milk is kept free from any possible colostrum or penicillin residues.
5.4.1 Short rinsing
In case a rinsing is only meant for the milking installation, the following messages are displayed on the screen of
the robot box control panel:
• Pre-rinsing of milking installation
• Pumping the milk receiver jar empty
• Cleaning with a cleaning agent (Astri
®
-L) at a temperature of more than 40°C (104°F) may
cause equipment damage.
The teat cup tops are cleaned and the installation is rinsed with cold or lukewarm water (incl. Astri
®
-L cleaning
agent, if required). During this cleaning the air bleed holes in the teat cup are rinsed as well. At the end of the
rinsing, the long milk tubes are sucked empty one by one. The water is discharged by means of the milking robots
discharge system.
5.4.2 Main cleaning
In case of a main cleaning, the following messages are displayed on the screen of the robot box control panel:
• Pre-rinsing of milking installation
• Main cleaning
• Post rinsing of installation
A number of technical data, such as water temperature and cleaning status, are displayed as well.
Pre- and post rinsing are almost identical to short rinsing, with the exception that in case of pre- or post rinsing the
milk delivery line to the tank is rinsed as well. The main cleaning is carried out by pumping hot water of 98°C
(208°F) with a lye-based or acidic cleaning agent, namely Astri
®
-lin or Astri
®
-cid through the milking installation
and milk delivery line.
If there are several milking robots connected to one milk delivery line, the cleaning programme of the different
robots is started simultaneously.
After cleaning operations, the milking robot automatically returns to the In operation status after which milking can
be resumed.
5.4.3 Manual start-up of cleaning
If necessary, a cleaning can be simply started by hand as described in section 3.4.3 ’Set Cleaning’.
For start-up of a main cleaning select the menu "Cleaning". Then select option "Clean 1" for a cleaning with a
detergent (e.g. Astri
®
-lin). For an acid based main cleaning (e.g. Astri
®
-cid) select option "Clean 2".
Return to the main menu (via the stop-button) after having answered the above mentioned queries. Here it is
indicated that the cleaning is being prepared.
