Bearing Alignment
When the systemis correctlyinstalled, you must check the bearingalignment
to ensure that targetsappear at their correctbearing relativeto the ship’s bow,
and adjust the alignment if necessary.
To adjustthe alignment, you need to select a visible targetof known bearing
that is displayed on the radar, and then use the setup options to adjust the radar
until the correctbearing reading is obtained.
➤ To determinethe alignmenterror, use one of the methods detailedbelow.
1. Visually identify a suitabletarget, such as a buoy that canbe seen towards
the edgeof the radar screen.Typically, thiswill be on the 1.5 nm range.
2. If thevessel is moored:
i. Determine the accurate bearingof the target relative to the ship’s bow
with the aid of a hand bearingcompass. i.e. Subtract the ship’s head
bearingfrom the targetvisual bearing.
Example 1
Visual bearing= 065 °M
Ship’s head= 021
°M
Relative bearing= 044°R
Example 2
Visual bearing = 030°M
Ship’s head= 042
°M
Relative bearing= -012°(+360) = 348°R
ii. Measure the relative bearingof the target on the radar using an EBL.
iii. Ifthere is a differencein the two bearings (alignmenterror), adjust the
radaras detailedbelow.
If the vesselis under way (in reasonably calm conditions):
