Positioning
Youcanchangethepositionofobjectsonthebuildtray—eveniftheywere
insertedwiththeOrient Automatically option.Toolsforchangingthe
positionofobjectsarepresentedin"ManipulatingObjectsontheTray"on
page5-31.
Theorientationofmodelsonthebuildtrayaffectshowquicklyandefficiently
theywillbeproducedbytheprinter,whereandhowmuchSupportmaterial
isused,andwhetherornotmodelpartswillhaveaglossyfinish.Therefore,
youshouldconsideravarietyoffactorswhendecidinghowtoplacemodels
onthebuildtray,usingthefollowingpositioningrules.
X-Y-ZRule
Thisruleconsidersamodel'souterdimensions.
➢ SincetheprintheadsmovebackandforthalongtheX-axis,theprinting
timealongthisaxisisrelativelyshort,comparedtoprintingtimealongthe
Y-axisandZ-axis.Fromthispointofview,itisadvisabletoplacethe
object'slargestdimensionalongtheX-axis.
➢ AnysurfacesthatcomeintocontactwithSupportmaterialsbecomematte.
➢ Sincemodelsarebuiltup,ontheZ-axis,in16-or30-micronlayers
(accordingtotheprintingmode),itisverytime-consumingtoprintatall
object.Fromthispointofview,itisadvisabletoplacetheobject'ssmallest
dimensionalongtheZ-axis.
➢ Sincetheprintheadsmeasureabout2inches(5centimeters)onthe
Y-axis,modelsmeasuringlessthanthis(ontheY-axis)areprintedinone
pass.Fromthispointofview,itisadvisabletoplacetheobject's
intermediatedimensionalongtheY-axis.
Tall-LeftRule
Thisruleconsidersmodelswhere,afterbeingorientatedonthebuildtray
accordingtootherconsiderations,onesideistallerthantheother.
➢ SincetheprintheadsmovealongtheX-axisfromlefttoright,taller
sectionsontherightrequiretheprintheadstoscanunnecessarilyfrom
theleftuntilreachingthem.If,ontheotherhand,thetallersectionsare
positionedontheleftofthebuildtray,theprintheadsonlyhavetoscan
themodeluntilprintingthesesections—oncethelowerpartshavebeen
completed.Therefore,youshouldpositionthetallersideofthemodel,
whenpossible,on the left.
ThefollowingrulesarebasedonthefactthatSupportmaterialisnotrequired
onthetopoftheprintedmodel.
Recess-UpRule
Thisruleconsidersmodelscontainingsurfacerecesses.
➢ Recessesinthesurface(likehollows,drillholes,etc.)should,when
possible,bepositionedface-up.
