1.1 Safety regulations for working on fuel
supply
Caution
For safety reasons, when the battery is not disconnected, the
fuse for the fuel pump must be removed before opening the
fuel system, otherwise the fuel pump could be activated by the
driver door contact switch. Fuse assignment ⇒ Current flow

Observe the following points during all installation work, in par‐
ticular in the engine compartment, due to the space limitations:
♦ Route all the various lines, e.g. for fuel, hydraulics, acti‐
vated charcoal filter system, coolant and refrigerant, brake
fluid and vacuum and electrical wiring in their original po‐
sitions.
♦ To avoid damage to lines, ensure sufficient clearance to
all moving or hot components.
When removing and installing fuel gauge sender or fuel pump
(fuel delivery unit) from a full or partly full fuel tank, observe the
following:
♦ Before starting work, the extraction hose of a switched-on ex‐
haust gas extraction system must be laid near to the assembly
opening of the fuel tank. The escaping fuel fumes can only be
extracted this way. If no exhaust gas extraction system is
available, a radial fan with a displacement greater than
15 m
3
/h can be used providing that motor is not in air flow.
♦ Prevent skin contact with fuel! Wear fuel-resistant gloves!
♦ If the engine is to be turned at starter speed without starting:
Pull off connectors for output stages.
