2 Engine
Perkins engine 404D-22 (35.7 kW)
Function description
The engine drives the variable displacement pump via a coupling.
Function
The engine features indirect injection. It is controlled via a mechanically
activated fuel injection pump. The cylinders are arranged in line. At the top
of the cylinder head there is one inlet valve and one exhaust valve per
cylinder. Every cylinder valve has its own valve spring. The pistons are
equipped with two compression rings and one oil scraper ring. The piston
height must be adjusted in such a way that the piston does not touch the
cylinder head. The proper piston height also ensures the efficient
combustion of the fuel, which is necessary to fulfill the emission
requirements. The engine crankshaft has five main crank pins. The
backlash is controlled with the help of pressure disks at the rear main
bearing. Alignment marks are stamped into the gear wheels to ensure
proper assembly. When piston no. 1 is at the top dead center, the marked
teeth of the crankshaft and camshaft gear wheels are in line with the
intermediate pinion. The crankshaft wheel drives the intermediate pinion
which in turn drives the camshaft and oil pump wheels. The fuel injection
pump is mounted in the cylinder block. The fuel pump is located on the
right side of the cylinder block. Both pumps are operated by the cams on
the camshaft. The fuel injection pump complies with the emission
requirements. Some fuel injection pumps are equipped with mechanical
speed control mechanisms to control the engine speed. Some fuel
injection pumps are equipped with an electronic speed control
mechanism. An oil gear pump is located in the middle of the intermediate
pinion. The engine oil pump conveys lubricating oil to the main oil
distribution line via a pressure relief valve and an engine oil filter.
Pressurized oil is distributed to the tilt levers through an external oil line
from the main oil distribution line to the cylinder head. The coolant flows
from the lower side of the radiator and through the centrifugal pump driven
by a belt. The coolant is cooled by the radiator and the temperature is
controlled by means of a thermostat. The efficiency of the engine, the
level of emission control and the engine output depend on strict
adherence to the mandatory operation and maintenance instructions.
Engine output and efficiency depend on the use of the mandatory fuels,
lubricating oils and coolants.
