CAUTION
NOTES
• Inspect all parts for wear or damage and replace as
necessary.
• Lubricate all parts with clean hydraulic oil before
assembly.
• Always install new O-rings for assembly; used parts
may leak.
• Utilize steering unit service fixture for assembly. (See
“Steering Unit Service Fixture” on page 7-10.)
1. Assemble spool (6) into sleeve (9) and align so that
cross pin slots are adjacent to each other.

2. Center the spring set (10) in the spool and sleeve
assembly, and install spring retaining ring (7).
NOTES
• See Figure 7-19. When installing spring set, insert
the curved springs (2) between the flat springs (1)
and push in place.
• Spring retaining ring must be able to rotate
unimpeded by the springs.
3. Press cross pin (8) in the spool and sleeve assembly.
4. Install thin bearing race (3), bearing (4), and thick
bearing race (5).
5. While holding the cross pin in place, guide the spool
and sleeve assembly into housing (23).
6. Place emergency steering ball (1) in port “P.”
7. Place ball stop (2) in port “P.”
8. Place check valve ball (11) in port “P.”
9. Install O-ring (20) in housing (23).
10. Place distributor plate (19) on housing (23) and align
mounting holes.
11. Assemble cardan shaft (22) to spool (6) ensuring
cardan shaft engages with cross pin (8).

12. Place gearwheel (18) over the distributor plate (19).
NOTE
See Figure 7-20. When installing the gearwheel, the
gearwheel must be correctly aligned so that it engages
with the cardan shaft. The cross pin (4) in the spool set
must line up with the bottom of the teeth in the gearwheel
(3).
13. Install O-rings (16) into groove on each side of the
gearwheel rim.
14. Place gearwheel rim (17) over the distributor plate
(19) and gearwheel (18) and align mounting holes.
15. Install spacer (21) over the cardan shaft (22).
Wear eye protection when assembling and
disassembling the steering unit. Springs and
other objects may be propelled into the air,
causing eye injury.
