Pump
The pump motor and pump unit make up the pump, which absorbs viscous ink from the printhead nozzles
and drains it to the waste ink drain pad through the cap. Since this printer has only one pump, it is used for
both black and color ink by alternating the rotational direction of the pump motor. When the pump motor
rotates forward (the direction in which paper is fed), it absorbs black ink. When it moves backward, it pumps
color ink. The pump unit is composed of the pulley, tube, and 2 rollers, as shown in Figure 2-10. To pump
ink, the pulley rotates the rollers, which squeeze the tube, reducing the volume to produce a vacuum. This
vacuum drains the ink into the waste ink drain pads.
