Foundry Switch and Router Installation and Configuration Guide
8 - 8 December 2000
Management Interfaces
Foundry switches and routers can be managed using any of the following interfaces:
Command Line Interface (CLI) a text-based interface accessible through a direct serial connection or a
Telnet session.
Web management interface A GUI-based management interface accessible through an HTTP (web
browser) connection.
IronView An optional SNMP-based stand-alone GUI application.
The CLI and Web management interfaces come standard on Foundry switches and routers. You can order
IronView separately. Contact your reseller or Foundry Networks for information.
Command Line Interface (CLI)
The CLI comes standard on all Foundry switches and routers. The CLI is a text-based operator interface that
allows you to configure a system with a PC or terminal without special software.
Up to five read-only Telnet sessions can operate concurrently on either a Foundry switch or router. Only one read-
write Telnet session is allowed at a time.
Web Management Interface
A Web management interface is supported on web browsers Netscape Navigator versions 2.0 or later, and
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 3.0 or later. No application software is required. The Web management
interface comes standard on all switches and routers.
To use the Web management interface, open a web browser and enter the IP address of the Foundry device in the
Location or Address field. The web browser contacts the Foundry device and displays a login dialog, as shown in
Figure 8.1.

For read-write access, enter set in the User Name field and a read-write community string that you have
configured on the device in the Password field, as shown in Figure 8.1. (For security, the software displays
asterisks when you type your password.)
For read-only access, enter get in the User Name field and public (the default read-only community string)
or a read-only community string you have configured in the Password field.
NOTE: Beginning with software release 05.1.00, the software does not contain a default read-write SNMP
community string. You must configure a read-write string before you can make configuration changes using the
Web management interface. See Establishing SNMP Community Strings on page 3-14.
Figure 8.2 shows an example of the Web management display of a BigIron Layer 3 Switch.
