AxlePivotBushings
Therearaxlemustbeheldinplacesnuglybytheaxlepivotpin.Excessive
movementoftheaxle,whichischaracterizedbyerraticsteering,canindicate
wornaxlepivotbushings.T ocorrecttheproblem,replacetheaxlepivotbushings
(item24inFigure182).
1.Removetherearaxlefromthemachine;refertoRemovingtheRearAxle
(page7–11).
2.Useadriftpunchandhammertodrivebothaxlepivotbushingsoutofthe
axlepivottube.Cleantheinsideofthetubetoremoveanydirtorunwanted
material.
3.Applygreasetotheinnerandoutersurfacesofnewbushings.Useanarbor
presstoinstallthebushingsintothefrontandbackoftheaxlepivottube.
Thebushingsmustbeushwiththeaxletube.
4.Installtherearaxletothemachine;refertoInstallingtheRearAxle(page
7–12).
5.Lubricatethebushingsthroughthegreasettingontheaxlepivottube.
SteeringPivotBushings
Thesteeringpivotmusttsnuglyontothemountingpin.Excessivemovementof
thesteeringpivotmayindicatewornsteeringpivotbushings(item21inFigure
182)ortierodballjoints(item15and16inFigure182).
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,lowercuttingdeck(orimplement),shut
offtheengine,settheparkingbrake,andremovethekeyfromthekeyswitch.

2.Removethelocknut,bolt,andthrustwasherthatsecurethesteeringcylinder
rodendtothesteeringpivotplate(Figure183).
3.Removethe4jamnutstoallowbothtierodendstobedisconnectedfrom
thepivotplate.Inspectallthetierodendballjointsforwearordamage
andreplaceasnecessary.
4.Removetheretainingringandthrustwasherthatsecurethesteeringpivot
plate(item22inFigure182)totherearaxle.Slidethesteeringpivotoffof
themountingpinatthebottomoftheaxle.
