Modem Basics
Understanding How a Modem Works
The modem serves two major functions:
Data communications function
Sends information to and
receives information from an online service, a host mainframe
computer that provides electronic mail, and other personal
computers.
Facsimile (fax) communications function
Sends and receives
text and images from facsimile (fax) machines and other
computers.
After you set up your modem software, you are ready to start
using your modem. You seldom need to use the AT command set
if you are using communications and fax software because the
modem will be controlled by the software. In the rare event that
you do need to use the AT command set, you can access the
information through the online Reference Guide. Go to the
Commands menu at the top of any modem screen.
NOTE:
The modem interfaces with Windows under Unimodem to
provide data and fax capability to Windows-compatible
applications. If you are running Windows 95, the modem also
provides analog speakerphone functionality to TAPI-compliant
applications.
