NetIron and BigIron Redundant Management Modules
Redundant management modules provide redundancy to prevent downtime in the event that a management
module stops operating. Redundant management modules also provide increased route capacity for Layer 3
Switches running Border Gateway Protocol Version 4 (BGP4). In addition, redundant management modules
contain a configurable temperature sensor that sends a Syslog message and SNMP trap if the temperature on the
module exceeds a specified warning level. The temperature sensor also can shut the module down automatically
to prevent damage.
You can use one or two redundant management modules in a Chassis device. Using two redundant management
modules adds fault protection against system outage. The two modules work together as active and standby
management modules. If the active module becomes unavailable, the standby module automatically takes over
system operation.
For more information and complete configuration and management information, see Using Redundant
Management Modules on page 5-1.
Management IV Module
The Management IV module is required for the NetIron Internet Backbone router and also is supported on BigIron
Chassis devices. Figure 9.6 shows a Management IV module.

NOTE: The NetIron Internet Backbone router is assembled at the factory with a model of Management IV
module designed for the NetIron. You cannot use a BigIron or FastIron II management module in the NetIron
chassis.
The Management IV module contains the following features:
466 Mhz PowerPC 750 processor with a 1 MB L2 cache
512 MB DRAM as part of a NetIron Internet Backbone router; 256 MB DRAM factory upgradable to 512 MB
for modules purchased separately for use on BigIron Chassis devices
