LANDING GEAR
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Standard Landing Gear Assembly
A. Introduction
The standard landing gear assembly (landing
gear) supports the helicopter when it is in
contact with the ground. The landing gear can
withstand loads made during landing, ground
handling, and provides a stable platform to
prevent ground resonance.
The landing gear primarily absorbs normal
landing forces, with the capabilities to absorb
severe landing forces during overload condi
tions. The landing gear dimensions are based
on the required minimum roll-over and
minimum pitch-over angles. A minimum
angle of 27 degrees is maintained from the
center of gravity (CG) location to the skid-to-
ground contact point. The landing gear has
these components:
Forward and Aft Crosstubes - Provide
energy absorbing capabilities during normal
or severe landings.
Forward and Aft Saddle Assemblies -
Provide a means to attach the crosstube
assemblies to the fuselage attachment
points.
Side Stop Clamp Assemblies - Prevent
side movement of the crosstube assemblies.
Forward Spacer Fittings - Forward
attachments for the skid tubes and forward
crosstube assembly.
Landing Gear Damper Assemblies - Aft
attachments for the skid tubes and aft
crosstube assembly.
Skid Tubes - Provide landing gear-to-
ground contact points.
B. Forward and Aft Crosstubes
The forward and aft crosstubes are energy
absorbing tubes constructed from 7075 T6
aluminum alloy. The forward crosstube
attaches to the fuselage at FS 154.0 and BL
9.275 by the forward saddle assembly.
The aft crosstube is attached to the fuselage at
FS 233.0 and BL 23.25 by the aft saddle
assembly. The forward and aft crosstubes
provide elastic deformation during normal
landings. The crosstubes provide energy
attenuation and permanent deformation
during severe landings.
C. Forward and Aft Saddle Assemblies
The forward and aft saddle assemblies are
7050 T7451 aluminum alloy clamps that
attach to the fuselage fittings. The clamp
assemblies secure the forward and aft cross
tube assemblies to the exterior of the helicop
ter.
The saddle assemblies have elastomeric
rubber pads installed between the clamp and
crosstube to decrease landing gear-to-ground
resonance oscillations.
D. Side Stop Clamp Assemblies
Side stop clamp assemblies are 7050 T7451
aluminum alloy clamps with nonsymmetrical
flats. The clamp assemblies attach to each
crosstube assembly immediately inboard of the
forward and aft saddle assemblies.
The side stop clamp assemblies prevent side
movement of the crosstube during landing.
The clamp assembly uses a rubber pad
installed between the crosstube assembly and
clamp to decrease ground resonance oscilla
tions.
A portion of the side stop clamps have metal to
metal contact with the crosstube assemblies. A
bonding strap is secured from the clamps to
the fuselage attach fittings for lightning strike
protection.
E. Forward Spacer Fittings
The forward spacer fittings are 7075 T6
aluminum alloy spacers that attach to the
forward crosstube assembly and skid tubes.
The spacer fittings secure the skid tubes to the
crosstube assembly. The spacer fittings
transfer landing loads from the skid tubes to
the crosstube assemblies.
