HYDRAULIC SYSTEM
MAINTENANCE PRACTICES
1. Hydraulic System Inspection/Test
A. Hydraulic System Inspection
(Ref. Figure 201)
(1). Inspect exterior surfaces of hydraulic
components for nicks, gouges,
scratches, cracks and corrosion.
(a). Minor scratches, without burrs or
raised material, that do not pene
trate through protective finish are
acceptable without rework.
(b). Nicks, gouges, corrosion pits or other
minor surface damage that does not
exceed a depth of 0.040-inch (0.102
cm) or 10 percent of material thick
ness, whichever is less after rework,
are permissible.
(c). No cracks are allowed.
(d). No mating or working surface repair
is allowed.
(e). Touchup removed protective finish as
required (Ref. Section 20-40-00).
(f). Replace components if damage
exceeds repairable limits, or if
damage occurs on an oil seal surface,
radius, in a hole or on a mating or
working surface of a part.
(2). Inspect for chafed, cracked, dented,
nicked and scratched tubes.
(a). Replace entire tube assembly if
tubing is deformed and if nuts and
unions are damaged.
(b). Replace tube assembly if tube is
dented more than 10 percent of the
tube diameter.
(c). Replace tube assembly if nicked or
chafed more than 10 percent of the
tube wall thickness.
(d). Torque screws until mating rubber
cushions just contact when reinstal
ling rubber cushioned tubing clamp
blocks.
(3). Inspect for chafed, deteriorated, cut,
frayed and/or cracked hoses. None
allowed.
(4). Inspect for loose, broken and/or cracked
clamps. None allowed.
(5). Inspect manifold/reservoir fluid level;
Service as required. Replace contami
nated filters.
(6). Inspect electrical components.
(a). Foreign objects and corroded, bent
broken, loose or missing pins. None
allowed.
(b). Dirt, contamination with fluid or
rough locking action. None allowed.
(c). Wire harness for chafing and loose
installation. None allowed.
(7). If pump is known to have operated
without fluid for 30 seconds or more,
replace the pump and remove and
inspect filter elements for metallic
particles.
(8). Inspect fittings for crossed, burred and
stripped threads when hoses and tubes
are disconnected. None allowed. Cap or
plug all disconnected fittings. Plug all
open ports. To indicate exact location,
identify ends before disconnecting lines
and hoses.
B. Hydraulic System Pressure Leak Test
(1). No external leakage is allowed except
at servocylinder gland seals. Perform
the following to determine if the
leakage is excessive:
(a). Slight wetting at seals or signs of
fluid insufficient to form a drop is
considered as seepage or residual
fluid and is not external leakage.
(b). Wipe servocylinders clean of any fluid
at the gland seals and weep holes.
(c). Attach GSE cart to hydraulic system
1 and 2 GSE panel (Ref. Figure 201).
(d). Apply 500 psig external hydraulic
pressure to system 1 and 2.
