FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION
1. Fire Extinguisher System
The fire extinguisher system consists of two
fire bottle assemblies, discharge tubes,
distribution tubes, cross flow tubes, wiring
harness, and mounting brackets.
Each fire bottle is equipped with dual valve/
outlet ports with discharge cartridges, a
pressure gauge with an electrical low pressure
warning sensor, filler port, and thermal relief
valve.
2. Fire Extinguisher System Components
A. Fire Bottle
The fire bottles are made of stainless steel,
with mounting lugs permanently attached.
The fire bottle is designed for a service
pressure of 750 psig (5171 kPa). with a burst
pressure of 2900 (19,995 kPa). The fire bottles
contain 60 cu in (983 cu cm) of Halon 1301,
and are pressurized with nitrogen gas to 750
psig (5171 kPa) @ 70°F (21°C).
B. Dual Valves/Outlet Ports
The valve/outlet ports swivel 360° and are
opened by an electrically activated discharge
cartridge. The cartridges are armed for firing
when the fuel shutoff valves are placed in the
OFF position. The cartridges are fired when
the bottle discharge switch on the fuel system
panel is placed in the primary or alternate
position.
C. System Tubing
Discharge tubes flow extinguishing agent from
the primary valve/outlet port (red) to the
engine deck through fitting. Distribution tubes
flow extinguishing agent and incorporate two
openings each for emitting the agent.
The cross flow tubes are connected to the
alternate valve/outlet port (blue). Cross flow
tubes flow extinguishing agent to the opposite
side discharge tube for fire extinguisher
redundancy.
D. Pressure Gauges
Each container has a pressure gauge which
indicates pressure of the extinguishing agent.
The gauges have a green band from 500-1000
psig (3447-6895 kPa) and are graduated in
100 psig (689 kPa) increments with a accuracy
of plus or minus 30 psig (207 kPa).
Each gauge provides an electrical signal to the
Integrated Instrument Display System (IIDS)
display (TANK PRESS LO) when pressure
drops to 250 ± 25 psig (1724 ± 172 kPa).
E. Filler Ports
Each container has a filler port for installation
of the extinguishing agent and pressurized
gas. A safety outlet is incorporated as a
diaphragm to relieve excessive pressure in the
container at 1700-2000 psig (11,721-13,790
kPa) or when ambient temperature exceeds
210° F (99° C).
