Preparing for Installation
Heat Dissipation and Airflow Requirements
The maximum and typical rates of heat released from the expansion racks are listed below. In
order to cool the system properly, ensure that adequate airflow travels through the system.
TABLE 66
Heat Dissipation
Rack Units Maximum Typical
Full rack BTU/hour kJ/hour 43,000 45,400 30,100 31,800
Half rack BTU/hour kJ/hour 23,600 24,900 16,500 17,400
Quarter rack BTU/hour kJ/hour 11,600 12,250 8,100 8,600
Caution - Do not restrict the movement of cool air from the air conditioner to the cabinet, or the
movement of hot air out of the rear of the cabinet.
Observe these additional requirements:
■
Allow a minimum clearance of 914 mm (36 inches) at the front of the rack, and 914 mm (36
inches) at the rear of the rack for ventilation. There is no airflow requirement for the left and
right sides, or the top of the rack.
■
If the rack is not completely filled with components, cover the empty sections with filler
panels.
