1.Beforestartingtheengine,performtheenginepre-tripinspectionand
dailymaintenancechecksinon“PRE-TRIPINSPECTIONANDDAILY
MAINTENANCE”,page192.
2.Makesuretheparkingbrakesareengaged.
3.Placethetransmissioninneutralordepresstheclutchpedal.
CAUTION
DONOTcranktheengineformore
than30secondsatatime;waittwo
minutesaftereachtrytoallowthe
startertocool.Failuretofollowthese
instructionscouldcausestarterdamage.
Note:Somestartersareequippedwithstarterprotection.Iftheengineisrunning,the
startertemperatureistoohigh,thetransmissionisnotinneutralortheclutchpedalis
notdepressed,starterengagementisinhibited.Also,whenthekeyisturnedtothe
startposition,thereisaoneseconddelaybeforethestarterisengaged.
Note:ThestarterwillnotoperatorifthePTOisengaged.
4.Turnontheignitionwiththeswitchkey.Sometell-taleswillcomeoninaroutine
checkthatshowsthebulbsandsystemsareOKIfanyofthetell-talesstaylit,that
functionofthevehiclemaynotbeoperable.DONOToperatethevehicleuntil
theproblemisrepaired.Foranexplanationofthetell-tales,RefertotheDriver
InformationDisplayManual.
5.Turnthekeytothestartposition.Releasekeyassoonastheenginehasstarted.For
theV olvoengine,thepreheatercanbeengagedtohelpstartingincoldtemperatures.
CAUTION
Ifatstart-up,orthereafter,theoil
pressuregaugeindicatesanydropinoil
pressure,theenginemustbeshutdown
immediately.Failuretostoptheengine
maycausemajorenginedamage.
