ofasufcientlyviolentcollision,acontrolunitactivatesthegasgeneratorignitorand

theairbaginates.Tocushiontheimpact,theairbagdeateswhencompressed.This

alsoreleasessomenontoxicsmokeintothecab.Theentiresequence,frominationto

deationoftheairbag,takesafewtenthsofasecond.

TheSRSsystemiscontinuallymonitoredbythecontrolunit.Acontrolunitis

mountedonabracketabovetheenginecoverwhichdetectsdeceleration.Thecontrol

unitalsocontainsastandbypowerunitwhichcansupplythesystemwithpowerfora

shorttime,incasethenormalsupplybreaks.
