Cleaning parts
The surface of the sintered parts is cleaned of adhering plastic powder in the Shot-
peening cabinet using a shot-peening gun. The recommendations stated in the
following apply for all EOS materials except PrimeCast
® 101 and PrimePart® ST
PEBA 2301.
The post-treatment of the parts is a very important aspect for ensuring the quality of
the parts. Even if parts are built accurately, the part may not meet the quality
criteria due to inappropriate post-treatment:
➢ Loose powder that is not removed may be present in functional parts and impair
their function.
➢ The part may not be accurate, as there may still be powder adhering to the part.
Necessary activities:
1. Pre-clean parts with compressed air in the Shot-peening cabinet.
2. Finely shot-peen parts in the Shot-peening cabinet using glass balls.
For shot-peening the parts EOS recommends:
➢ Shot-peening medium for parts made of plastic powder type PA 2200:
Glass beads with a size of 70 - 110 µm.
➢ Shot-peening pressure:
2 bar (fine part geometries) up to 4 bar (solid part geometries).
For all other materials follow the application instructions for the related
material.
For the thorough post-treatment of parts EOS recommends the installation of 2
Shot-peening cabinets. In the first Shot-peening cabinet the parts can be
thoroughly cleaned using compressed air, in the second finely shot-peened using
glass balls as the shot-peening medium.
If only one Shot-peening cabinet is used, the glass balls will be contaminated
with loose powder on the application of compressed air. This situation will
reduce the effectiveness of the glass balls.
To automate the shot-peening process, EOS recommends equipping the Shot-
peening cabinet with a motor and rotating basket for smaller, robust parts. In
this way the parts are automatically rotated and shot-peened.
