stripthefactory-appliedunderbodysealerbacktoasuitable
breakpoint.Ensurethatacleanmetalsurfaceisexposedand
thattheedgeoftheexistingsealeradheressoundlytothe
panel.
Applynewunderbodysealerbetweenprimerandsurfacer
paintoperations.Applyseamsealerasnecessarybefore
applicationofunderbodysealer.Ensurethatblankingplugs
andgrommetsintheoorpan(exceptthoseusedforwax
injection)arettedbeforeunderbodysealerapplication.Ret
anyheatfusibleplugswhichhavebeendisturbedinrepairwith
theaidofahotairblower,orreplacewithrubbergrommets.
Ensurethatsuspensionunits,wheels,tyres,powerunit,
exhaustandbrakes(includingallmountingpoints)areshielded
priortoapplicationoffreshunderbodysealer.
SeamSealers
Aheatcured,PVCbasedsealantisappliedtospecicjoint
seamsduringfactoryassembly.Thismaterialisnotsuitable
forserviceuseand,duringrepair,shouldbesubstitutedbyan
approvedSeamSealer.
Applyseamsealersaftertheapplicationofprimerandbefore
theapplicationofsurfacerandtopcoat.Theseamsealermust
formacontinuousbead,withtheproleofthebeaddependant
onthetypeofseam.Ifseamsealerisappliedwithabrush,
takeparticularcaretomaintaintherequiredcoverageofthe
seam.Whereshapingoftheseamsealerisrequired,usea
clothsoakedwithsolventsuchaswhitespirittoachievethe
requirednish.
EnsurethatALLaccessiblerepairseamsaresealedfollowing
arepair .Damagetoavehicleoftenexesareasofthebody
remotefromtheimpact.Asaresult,theseamsealerin
theseareasmaybedisturbedbysubsequentstraighteningand
repairoperations.Checkallseamsinthevicinityofthearea
undergoingrepairforevidenceofcrackedseamsealer,then
cleanoutasrequiredandapplyfreshseamsealerusingthe
followingprocedure:
Cleantheaffectedseamandre-treatanyexposedmetalareas
withasuitableetchingprimer.
Applyappropriateseamsealerasnecessary.
T reataffectedareawithanacid-etchprimer(andunderbody
sealerasapplicable).
Applyappropriatecolourcoat.
Whereseamsareinaccessiblefollowingthereassemblyor
ttingofcomponents,ensurethatapaste-typeseamsealeris
appliedtosuchseams.Certainseamsalsobecomeinaccessible
afterthecompletionofpanelrepairs.Insuchinstancesapply
seamsealerandpaintbeforenalassembly.Providedaccess
isadequate,applyseamsealertobothsidesofarepairjoint.
Whereaccessislimitedtoonesideonly(e.g.boxsections),
treattheaffectedboxmemberwithcavitywax.Seamsto
whichseamsealerisappliedduringfactoryassemblyare
detailedinthefollowingillustrations.
