General
Thenavigationsystemprovidescomputergeneratedaudible
andvisualrouteguidanceinformationtoguidethedriver
totheirdesireddestination.Thesystemallowsthedriver
tochoosethedesiredrouteusingminorormajorroads
ormotorwaysandeitherthequickestorshortestroute.
Directionstopointsofinterest,suchashospitals,museums,
monumentsandhotelsarealsoavailable.Thecomputeruses
mapinformationstoredonanSDmemorycardtodetermine
thebestrouteforthejourneyandprovidethedriverwith
directionanddetailsofapproachingjunctions.
ThecurrentpositionofthevehicleisdeterminedusingaGlobal
PositioningSystem
GPS.TheGPSusessatellitesthatorbit
theearthevery12hoursataheightof20,000kmandprovide
informationaboutthesatellitepositioni.e.latitude,longitude,
altitude,almanacdataandtime.
Thealmanacdataisthecurrentstatusofsatelliteswhich
orbittheearth.Thecomputerdetermineswhichsatellites
are'visible'tothesystemandtheircurrentpositionand
relationshiptoeachother.Usingthisinformationthe
computercanaccountforpositionaldeviationsofthesatellites
andcompensatetoenhancetheaccuracyofthenavigation
system.Thenavigationsystemrequiresthealmanacdatafrom
atleastfourdifferentsatellitestocalculateafourdimensional
'x'onitslocation.Asthevehiclemovesthecomputer
continuallyupdatesthisinformationsothatatalltimesthe
computerknowsthepreciselocationofthevehicle.
Thedirectionofthevehicleisdeterminedbythenavigation
computerusingasolidstategyrosensorlocatedinsidethe
computer.Thegyrosensorsuppliesangularaccelerationdata
forthevehicletothenavigationcomputer.Thecomputeruses
thisinformationtodeterminethedirectionoftravelofthe
vehicle.
Controlsforthenavigationsystemarefoundontheaudiohead
unitandtheSEL/ESCcontrolbetweenthefrontfasciaairvents.
TheNavigationScreencomprisesacolourLCDscreenlocated
abovetheSEL/ESCcontrol.Audioinstructionsareprovided
viathedoor-mountedspeakers.
