OPC UA PROTOCOL
OPC Unified Architecture is a platform-independent standard that enables different
kinds of systems and devices to communicate by sending request and response mes-
sages between Clients and Servers over various types of networks. It supports secure
comm
unication that assures the identity of OPC UA Applications and resists attacks.
Being platform-independent means that it functions on any hardware platforms (tradi-
tional PC hardware, cloud-based servers, PLCs, etc.) and any operating systems (Micro-
soft Windows, Apple OS X, Android, or any distribution of Linux, etc.). Furthermore,
OPC UA off
ers the necessary infrastructure for interoperability across the enterprise,
from machine-to-machine, machine-to-enterprise and everything in between.
OPC UA Companion Specifications
OPC UA specifies base information models that define commonly used objects including
both real-time and historical data variables and alarms.
Based on these, new information models for specific industries can be created. The
specifications of these models are called Companion Specificat
ions. A number of Com-
panion Specifications have already been created. Datalogic implements the OPC UA for
AutoID Specification and the Device Information Model Specification. For more infor-
mation on the Companion Specifications, visit the OPC Foundation website.
Available commands (methods)
A complete description of the commands, or methods, is provided in the AutoID Com-
panion Specification. The commands are also described in the OPC UA Technical Note
(download it from Datalogic website).
The Matrix 220 reader can perform the ScanSt
art and ScanSt
op methods in OPC UA
environment:

Compatible OPC UA Clients
The Matrix 220 reader is compatible with all OPC UA Clients working in accordance with
the AutoID Companion Specification. For example, the following OPC UA Clients can be
used:
• UAExpert – Unified Automation
• dataFeed OPC UA Client – Softing
A specific OPC UA Client can be programmed with the OPC UA Stack provided by the
O
PC F
oundation. It is also possible to use the OPC UA SDKs of other manufacturers.
