Sounds, the Sound Banks, 1-2-3 and MIDI Bank 6
The 444 PS1000 Rom Sounds have been divided into 4 “families” called
BANKS. Banks 1, 2 and 3 are selected from the panel. Bank 6 is “invisible”
and is selected via MIDI only, when using PS1000 in MIDI setups as a slave
device. The first Bank (1) contains the industry standard General MIDI sound
library. This family is designed to be used when the PS1000 is required to play
General MIDI song disks or when the instrument is being controlled by a com-
puter program or some other device which requires a General MIDI sound li-
brary. The second and third Banks (2 & 3) contain sounds taken from
Generalmusic’s own extensive sound library. These sounds, along with the
sounds in Bank 1, ensure compatibility with Generalmusic’s own song library,
and also with song disks created on other Generalmusic instruments. All the
Sounds in Banks 1, 2 and 3 are organized into 16 instrument family Groups
(Piano, Mallet, Organ, etc.). The MIDI Bank 6 contains an additional 60 Sounds,
but these are not organized in instrument family groups. Refer to the MIDI
Bank 6 ROM Sounds table on page A.2 of the Appendix.
The current Bank number is displayed in the bottom right hand corner, to the
left of the Upper 1 track area.
Drumkits
Among the instrumental Sounds are also 17 Drumkits; 16 in the Percussive
Groups (B) Banks 2 and 3, Pr. Ch. 112 - 119, and 1 in Midi Bank 6, Pr. Ch 112.
For example, Preset n. 7 of the User Sound B group recalls the Standard Drumkit
assigned to the Upper 1 keyboard section.
If you play on the keyboard, you will hear each note play a percussive instru-
ment sound.
Samples
The PS1000 can load new disk-based sound samples into memory (Sample
RAM memory) which can then be assigned to the Preset parts and Style tracks,
just like any other Sound. Access to the Samples Bank is via the SAMPLES
(SMP) button. Theoretically, up to 7 disk-based Samples can be loaded to
RAM memory (locations 1 - 7), but this will depend on the size of each sample.
Via MIDI, the Samples Bank corresponds to Bank 5, meaning that Samples
can be selected via MIDI by sending a CC00 message with value 5 and Pro-
gram change values from 1 - 7 to the PS1000 from the master controlling de-
vice.
The Sample-RAM memory is backed by an internal battery which maintains
data after turning the instrument off.
