2 Introduction
This chapter introduces the LumaSMART
®
system and describes the system’s technology along with the major
features and benefits.
2.1 System Overview
LumaSMART is a fiber optic temperature sensing and control system specifically designed for direct winding
temperature measurement and cooling control in high-voltage power transformers. Building on years of successful
field-proven performance of the industry-standard
LumaSense WTS-22 and ThermAsset systems, the LumaSMART system incorporates new features that improve
ease of use, add capability, and reduce the cost of ownership.
LumaSMART System Overview
The LumaSMART controller provides direct measurement of the transformer winding temperature with high
accuracy and real-time response. Programmable temperature alarm setpoints and relays are available to directly
control transformer backup cooling equipment.
Note: Setpoint is defined as a temperature, or function of multiple temperature readings, at which
an alarm or relay is energized or deenergized.
Analog outputs and a digital serial interface are available to communicate with Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition (SCADA) and other data-logging systems. Modbus, DNP3, and IEC61850 are also supported.
