User Manual Installation of Probes and Accessories 40
3.4.5 Probe Routing inside the Transformer
Whenever possible, support or route the probe through insulated tubing. Insulating fiberboard tubing can also be
used as a guide for the internal fiber runs. This provides protection without applying stress on the fiber. If such
support is not provided, tie the fiber to supporting structures at various points within the transformer. Allow slack
to accommodate sudden movement of the windings.
If the clamping structure does not compress the fiber, the fiber can be clamped at various points. If a mechanical
clamp is used, create a groove in the clamping surface to prevent crushing of the fiber.
Caution: Do not install the fiber in such a way that it is under tension. There must always be
adequate excess fiber length, so that sudden movement of the transformer windings (for example,
caused by a changing load) does not snap the fiber.
3.5 Installing the Tank Wall Adapter Plate
The adapter plate assembly has four to sixteen stainless steel feed-through ports welded on to the center of the
plate. Position the adapter plate with the “1” at the top, and the four small, tapped holes facing toward the tank
exterior (see figure below).
Tank Wall Adapter Plate with 16 Feedthrough Holes
There are also two #10-24-UNC tapped holes on the plate interior, located at the 12 and 6 o’clock positions. For
ease of welding, use bolts and washers to temporarily clamp the adapter plate to the tank. Check that clamping
hardware is removed after welding to ensure parts don’t accidentally loosen during transformer operation.
The adapter plate accommodates four to sixteen fiber optic cables and is supplied with caps to protect the threads
of unused channels.
Caution: To plug unused channels preventing oil leakage, use LumaSense Internal and External tank
wall plugs.
