Planning Station Locations
Keep the following information in mind when planning station locations and endpoint types:
Endpoints:
o IP: Plan where IP endpoints are going to be located and whether a LAN port exists at
that location. One LAN port is required for each endpoint. If a computer or other LAN
device is plugged into this port (for example, a computer network cable), simply plug
the IP endpoint into the LAN port, then plug the computer network cable into the LAN
port on the IP endpoint.
o Digital: An Inter-Tel 5000 platform equipped with a Digital Expansion Interface (DEI)
unit and Digital Endpoint Module (DEM-16) can support nine Inter-Tel digital endpoint
models and the Inter-Tel Single-Line Adapter (SLA). The SLA can be used to connect
one or two single line endpoints, an OPX trunk, or—in the USA only—a DID trunk.
o Analog Single Line: Analog single line endpoints include devices that operate on an
industry-standard tip-ring/AC telephone circuit, such as DTMF endpoints, fax
machines, answering machines, and playback devices. Playback devices are useful as
hunt group overflow/announcement stations. For specifications, see page 4-51.
Using the following interfaces, single line endpoints can be installed on an Inter-Tel
5000 platform:
Four-port Single Line Module (SLM-4)—for installation details, see page 5-50.
Eight-port Single Line Module (SLM-8)—for installation details, see page 5-76.
Single-Line Adapter (SLA)—for installation details, see page 5-57.
IP SLA—for installation details, see page 5-175.
Modem Data Port Module (MDPM) installed in a digital endpoint—for installation
details, see page 5-191.
The dual single line port on the back of the Inter-Tel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base
Server—for installation details, see page 5-27.
Mini-DSS Units: Model 8660 endpoints can connect directly to a Mini-DSS (Model 8416).
The number of Mini-DSS units is not limited by system resources. For installation details,
see “Installing a Mini-DSS Unit” on page 5-180.
DSS/BLF Units: Three models of Direct Station Select (DSS)/Busy Lamp Field (BLF) units
can be installed on Inter-Tel digital endpoints, depending on the model of endpoint. Each
digital endpoint supports up to four DSS/BLF units, and each Inter-Tel 5000 platform
supports a total of 20 DSS/BLF units. For installation details, see “Installing a DSS/BLF
Unit” on page 5-182.
NOTE
The RJ-14 jack that supports the two single line (SL) ports is wired
internally through a switch to the RJ-14 next to it that supports two
loop start (LS) trunk ports. In a system outage, the SL ports connect
directly to the LS ports. This wiring design allows the customer to
make one or two single line endpoints available that can be used to
dial out on the LS trunks in the event of total system and/or site
power loss. During normal system operation, the LS and SL ports can
be programmed in DB Programming to function as desired.
