Chapter 5: Installation
Installing the USB-B Port Serial Driver
Inter-Tel
®
5000 Installation Manual – Issue 2.4, May 2008 Page 5-99
Installing the USB-B Port Serial Driver
The USB-B port on the front of the Inter-Tel 5000 Base Server chassis allows you to connect a
laptop and view online messages. However, a driver must be installed on the laptop to allow the
laptop to use this USB-B port. For information on viewing online messages, see “Using Terminal
Emulation to Retrieve Online Messages” on page 5-100.
To install the USB-B serial driver:
1. Do not connect any cable into the USB-B port until instructed.
2. Locate the Driver folder
on the PC where you
installed DB
Programming. The folder
is located at
C:\InterTel\CS5000
\Drivers. This folder
contains the zip file that
contains the driver
installation files and
driver components.
3. Double-click the CP2101_Drivers.exe file to install the driver files.
4. Connect a USB 2.0 cable from a laptop to the USB-B port. The Found New Hardware
Wizard appears.
5. Point the New
Hardware Wizard to
the file type it
requests, to
complete the driver
installation. The files
the Hardware Wizard
needs are located at
C:\SiLabs\MCU
\CP2101\WIN. If
you selected a
different directory
when unzipping the
CP2101_Drivers.exe
file, then navigate to
that location.
Retrieving SMDR or Error Message Output Data
SMDR/Error message output is provided over an IP connection. You can retrieve it through an
external voice processing system using a specific IP address and port number. This feature is
not available in Enterprise
®
Messaging or through Basic Voice Mail. SMDR can be buffered to a
Voice Processing Unit (VPU) or System Manager, if enabled or connected.
For information on retrieving SMDR/Error Message information, refer to the Diagnostics and
Troubleshooting chapter in the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming Guide (part no:
580.8006), or refer to the Voice Processing Unit Installation Manual, part no. 835.2890. To set
SMDR parameters and error message outputs, refer to the Programming chapter in the Inter-Tel
5000 Features and Programming Guide (part no: 580.8006) for details.
NOTE When using the USB-B port, use a cable designed for the USB 2.0 specification.
NOTE The Hardware Wizard installs the selected drivers two times.
