Installing an External Voice Processing System
For integrated voice processing (voice mail, automated attendant, hunt group announcement
and overflow, optional Fax-On-Demand, buffered SMDR, Record-A-Call, etc.), an optional
external voice processing PC with special applications software can be attached to the system.
For additional voice processing information, refer to the voice processing information in the
Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming Guide (part no: 580.8006).
Introduction
An external voice processing PC is required for the Unified Messaging feature and to support
increased voice mail capacities. External voice processing is provided using an Enterprise
®
Messaging (EM) PC or the Voice Processing Unit (VPU). EM and the VPU run Windows 2000.
For additional information about these external voice processing systems, including installation,
software installation and upgrading, see the following documentation:
• Enterprise
®
Messaging Installation Manual, part no. 780.8006.
• Voice Processing Unit Installation Manual, part no. 835.2890.
Attaching a Voice Processing Unit (VPU)
This section provides information about attaching an external voice processing system to the
Inter-Tel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server. For information about installing and setting up the
available external voice processing systems, see the documentation provided with those units.
For an illustration of how an external voice processing PC attaches to an Inter-Tel CS-5200/
5400/5600 Base Server, see Figure 5-65 on page 5-174. For sample diagrams of the
assembled voice processing PC, see Figure 5-39 on page 5-74. For DB Programming tasks in
this procedure, refer to the Inter-Tel 5000 Features and Programming Guide (part no:
580.8006).
To attach an external voice processing system:
1. Back up Basic Voice Mail (BVM).
2. Disable BVM.
NOTICE
As personal computer (PC) technology evolves, Inter-Tel continually enhances the design of
its voice processing systems. Depending on the actual version of equipment shipped for your
installation, the following instructions may vary. If revised instructions are included with the
equipment, see the most recent information.
WARNING
Possible Electric Shock. Use the LCD panel to shut down the system, then unplug the
Inter-Tel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server, power cord before connecting the external voice
processing PC. The Inter-Tel CS-5200/5400/5600 Base Server, power supply unit operates
on 110 VAC and retains a charge after it has been turned OFF. Failure to allow the high
voltage to dissipate can cause bodily injury. Like the Inter-Tel 5000 platform, the external
voice processing PC must have an isolated, dedicated, properly grounded AC circuit for
proper operation and it should be plugged into an UPS.
IMPORTANT
As with the Inter-Tel 5000 system, the external voice processing PC must
be connected to an isolated, dedicated, properly grounded AC circuit and
UPS for proper operation. The UPS helps to avoid hard drive corruption in
the event of a power loss.
