Selecting cables and cable lengths:

Cables need to have different properties when they exceed certain lengths. These

cablepropertiesarebasedonthepropertiesoflightinanopticalber.

Single Mode The cable is a type of cable that has a relatively small light-car-

ryingcore.Lightinasmallcoremakesfewerinternalreections

so that the path of light is close to a straight line. Therefore, the

light can travel further distances.

Multi Mode The cable is a type of cable that has a relatively large light-car-

ryingcore.Lightinalargercoremakesmorereectionsandcan

only travel shorter distances.
