9 — Procedures for Testing with the Baker ZTX
Low-impedance Armature and Coil Testing Using the Baker ZTX
The Baker AT-101 ZTX extends the capabilities of the Baker DX to enable low-impedance coil
testing of the type found in DC armatures and other coils. The Baker DX as a standalone unit
can perform DC FC (field coil) and span (armature coil, or arm span) testing. The arm span test is
typically used as a substitute for not having the low-impedance capability of the Baker ZTX arm
span test accessory.
The DXin combination with the Baker ZTX unitexpands capabilities to test low-impedance
coils such as DC series fields, pole face windings, and interpoles.
The Baker DX-15A has built-in ZTX functionality and can be used in this application. Test leads
are connected directly to the source and sense ports on the front panel of the tester.
The following procedure focuses on testing low-impedance armature windings, with references
to coil testing where needed.
WARNING: High-voltage testing. Make sure all personnel are away from the
device under test and not in contact with either the load or the test leads.
Take all precautions to prevent injury or death from electrical shock.
Armature Test Procedures for the Baker ZTX
1. Ensure that the Baker ZTX accessory has been properly connected to the DX host, and
that the test probes or fixture have been properly connected.
2. Ensure that the Active Folder and Active Record in the Status Bar show the proper
location where you want to store the test data.
3. Touch the Surge icon to enter Surge test mode.
4. Set the Configuration Options icon to display the ZTX icon. (When using the Baker
DX-15A, the Armature icon is selected.)
5. Touch the Single-coil mode icon then touch the Arm Bar icon (DC IP icon for interpole
testing, single-coil icon for single coil testing).
