3-2-3 Controlling Backlights
NS-series PTs have the following two types of backlight modes.
ON: Backlight remain ON.
Flashing: Backlights alternates between ON and OFF.
Backlights can be controlled using the following method.
Controlling Backlights Using System Memory
System memory word $SB provides bits for controlling the backlight.
The system memory is manipulated as shown below when the need arises to control a backlight.
$SB10, the backlight mode control bit, operates as shown on the table.
To turn backlight ON: $SB10 turns from ON to OFF.
To make backlight flash: $SB10 turns from OFF to ON.
3-2-4 Turning OFF Screen Display
If the screen display is set to turn OFF when not required, the life of the backlight can be extended. The
backlight also turns OFF automatically while the screen display is turned OFF.
Screen display can be turned OFF using the following method.
Turning OFF Screen Display Using Screen Saver
Under System Menu – PT Settings, set Screen Saver to Display Erased and set the time from the last
operation until the screen saver will be started (1 to 255) under Screen Saver Start-up Time.
Specify a number from 1 to 255 in the Set Value Field to set a constant value for the screen saver
start-up time. If an indirect specification is used, the value of the set communications address will be
the screen saver start-up time. In that case, set BCD or binary as the storage type.

If the screen saver start-up time is specified indirectly, store 1 to 255 at the specified communica-
tions address.
The screen saver will not start if a value outside this range or a value that cannot be expressed by
the specified storage format is stored.
3-2-5 Displaying Cleared Screens
If the screen display is turned OFF using the screen saver function, the screen display can be turned
ON using the following method.
