10-6-3 Basic Probe Care
The Vivid™ 4 User Manual and the individual probe manufacturers’ handling instructions provide a
complete description of probe care, maintenance, cleaning and disinfection. Ensure that you are
completely familiar with the proper care of GE Medical Systems probes.
WARNING: Any evidence of wear on a probe indicates that it must not be used. Ultrasound
probes can be easily damaged by improper handling. See the Vivid™ 4 User Manual and also
refer to the probe manufacturer’s handling instructions, for more details.
Failure to follow these precautions can result in serious injury and equipment damage. Failure
to properly handle or maintain a probe may also void its warranty.
TEE and Interoperative probes often have special usage considerations; always refer to the individual
probe manufacturers’ handling instructions/user manual.
10-6-4 Probe Cleaning
10-6-4-1 Basic Probe Cleaning
WARNING: Always disinfect a defective probe before returning it to the manufacturer. Be sure
to tag the probe as being disinfected.
CAUTION: To help protect yourself from blood-borne diseases when cleaning and handling
probes, wear approved, non-allergic disposable gloves.
Refer to the individual probe Users Manual (or care instructions supplied with the probe), for specific
probe cleaning instructions.
NOTE: Failure to follow the prescribed cleaning or disinfection procedures will void the probe’s warranty.
10-6-4-2 General Probe Cleaning Instructions
WARNING: Do not clean or immerse probes using any of the following products:
• Acetone
• Ammonium chloride
• Alcohol, ethanol, isopropanol, or methanol
•Bleach
• Detergent
• Hydrogen peroxide
• Iodine
• Para-hydroxybenzoic acid
• Aloe vera, perfume, lanolin, or mineral oil
