THE
STEERING
GEAR
Section
13.1
-
STEERING-COLUMN
Removing
1.
Disconnect
the batteries.
2.
Remove
the carburetter air
cleaners.
3.
Remove
the
upper
pinch-bolt from
the
steering-column
universal joint.
4.
Remove
lower
panel from under
the left-hand side
of
the fascia
panel.
5. Disconnect
the
steering-column
switch
wiring
at
the
snap
connectors
below
the
fascia.
,
6.
Unscrew
the three
bolts
securing
the
steering-column
to
the toe-plate.
7.
Note
the location, quantity,
and thickness
of the
packing
washers between
the
column
upper
xing
anges and
the body
brackets,
remove
the
securing
bolts and
collect the
packing
washers.
If the
packing
washers
are
mislaid
or
their
fitting positions
are
not
recorded,
the
steering
must
be
aligned
as
described
in
Section 13.3
when
refitted.
8.
Withdraw
the
steering—column
complete
with
steering-wheel and
switches.
Dismantling
9.
Withdraw
the
motif disc
from
the
centre
of the
steering-wheel;
unscrew
the
steering-wheel retaining
nut
and,
using
a
suitable
puller-type
extractor,
remove
the
wheel.
10. Remove
the
three
left-hand
switch
cowl
retaining
screws.
11.
Unscrew
the
panel light
switch
retaining
screws
and
remove
the
left-hand
switch cowl.
12.
Remove
the
screw
retaining
the
right-hand
switch
cowl.
l3.
Unscrew
the
two
screws
securing
the combined
overdrive
and
windshield
wiper/washer switch and
remove
the
switch
complete
with
wiring.
14.
Unscrew
the
two
screws
securing
the
combined
headlamp
asher,
horn and
direction indicator
switch,
and
remove
the
switch complete
with
wiring,
15.
Unscrew
the four ignition
switch
retaining
screws
and
remove
the
switch complete
with
wiring.
Reassembling
l6. Reverse
the
dismantling
procedure
in
9
to
15
.
Refitting
NOTE.—If
a new
steering-column
is being fitted it
must
be
aligned
as
described
in Section Ja.3.
17.
Fit the column assembly
into
the
car
and
enter
the
inner
column
into
the universal
joint.
18. Fit the packing washers
in
their
original
positions
between the column xing anges and the
body
brackets,
t the three
securing
bolts,
tightening
them
by hand
until
the
packing
washers
are
just
pinched.
19. Fit and tighten the three column
to
toe-plate xing
bolts.
20.
Tighten
the three
upper
xing bolts
to
the
torque
mgure
given in
‘GENERAL
DATA’.

21.
Fit and
tighten the
universal
joint
pinch-bolt
to
the
torque
gure
given in
‘GENERAL DATA’.

Ja.2
RACK
ASSEMBLY
Removing
1.
Raise
and
support
the
front
of the
car
and
remove
both front
road wheels.
2.
Remove
the
tie-rod ball
pin
locknuts.
3.
Using
tool 18G 1063,
detach
the tie-rod
ball
pins
from
the
steering
arms.
4.
Turn
the
steering
onto
the right lock
and
remove
the
universal
joint
lower
pinch-bolt.
5.
Remove
the
nuts
and
bolts
securing
the rack assembly
to
the front
cross-member,
noting
that the front bolts
are
fitted with
self-locking
nuts.
6.
Withdraw
the rack
assembly
downwards
from the
car.
Dismantling
7.
Carry
out
the
operations
detailed
in
Section J.6.
Refitting
NOTErIf
a new
rack assembly is being fitted
it
must
be
aligned
as
described
in Section Ja.3.
8. Reverse the
removing
procedure
in 1
to
6
ensuring
that when
entering
the
pinion
shaft
into
the universal
joint
both the steering-column
and rack
are
in
the
straight-ahead
position.
Section 13.3
ALIGNMENT
1.
Fit
the
toe-plate
seal
to
the
steering-column
and
position
the column in
the
car.
2.
Fit
one
packing
washer between
each
of the
two
top
column
xing
anges and the
body
brackets.
3.
Screw
in
the
two top
xing
bolts by hand
until
the
packing
washers
are
just
pinched.
4.
Check that
the column
is
free
to
move
forwards,
backwards and
sideways.
5. Screw in
the three
toe-plate
xing bolts,
tightening
them by hand
only.
6.
Check that
the lower
end of the
column
is
free
to
move
and
position
it
centrally
in
the
aperture.
7.
Fit
one
of the
two
larger point
gauges
of tool 186
1140
on
the
lower
end
of the column, positioning
it
so
that
the
retaining
screw
tightens
onto
the
at
machined
in
the
splines.
8.
Fit the remaining
large
points
gauge
of 18G 1140
to
the
pinion
shaft
so
that
the
retaining
screw
tightens
onto
the radial
groove
machined
in
the splines.
9.
Fit
the rack
assembly
and
tighten
the rack fixing
bolts.
10.
Slacken
the
screw on
the
column
point
gauge
and slide
the
gauge
down
until the
points
of both
gauges are
on
the
same
plane but
not
overlapping.
