test
equipment
to
the alternator terminals
as
I
shown
in
Fig. N26.
The variable
resistance
must
only
be connected
across
the battery for the
amount
of
time
necessary
to
carry
out
these
tests.
IMPORTANT—Ensure
that the
correct
battery and
alternator polarity
is
preserved.
Serious damage
to
the
alternator will result if the polarity
is reversed.

Start the
engine
and check the alternator
output.
a.
Run the
engine
at
850
r.p.m.
and observe the
test
bulb; the bulb should be extinguished.
b. Increase the
engine
speed
to
3:300
r.p.m.
and
adjust
the
variable
resistance
until
a
reading of
14 volts
is
registered
on
the
voltmeter;
at
these
settlngs
the
ammeter
should
register
a
reading of
approximately 34
amps.
If
the
test
bulb does
not
extinguish
or
its
brilliance
fluctuates,
or
if the
amrneter
reading
varies
DOB6ZB
considerably
from the
correct
reading,
a
fault
on
the
-
alternator
is
indicated and
the
alternator
must
be
removed for further
tests.
