Steering
alignment
1.
Rack shims.
2. Alignment
gauge,
ISO 1140.
The
steering—column
and
rack assembly
are
correctly
aligned
when the
gauges
meet
exactly
at
their
points
(see
Fig.
Ja.1).
Correct
any
horizontal
misalignment
by
moving
the
end of the
steering-column.
If
any
vertical misalignment
exists
between
the
gauge
points,
proceed
as
follows:
a.
Remove the
rack xing
bolts.
b.
Add sufcient
shims
(shim
thickness
.020
in.
(.508
mm.))
to
correct
the
misalignment,
between the
left-hand
and right-hand
mounting
brackets and the
cross-member
mounting bosses.
Do
not
rivet
the
shims
to
the
bosses
at
this
stage.
c.
Ret
and
tighten
the
rack
mounting
bolts.
.
Recheck
the
alignment of
the
gauge
points.
e.
If
the alignment
is
still
unsatisfactory,
adjust
the
shim
thickness.
f.
When
correct
alignment
of the
gauge
points
has
been
achieved,
rivet
the
shims
to
the
mounting
bosses
through the
holes
provided.

rack
assembly
and fully
tighten
the
rack
Tighten
the three
toe-plate
to
steering-column

steering-column
upper
fixing
bolts
to

torque
gure
given
in
‘GENERAL
DATA’.
Measure
the
gap
between
the
column
upper
mounting
ange
and the
body
bracket
at
the third
bolt
position.
Fit
packing
washers
to
the
thickness
of
the
gap,
then
t
and tighten
the
bolt
to
the
torque
gure
given
in
‘GENERAL
DATA’.
22. Fit the
two
universal
joint pinch-bolts
and
tighten
them
to
the
torque
gure
given
in
‘GENERAL
DATA’
.
