Reassembling

Check the insulation
of the
brush
springs
by

noting
the
following:
connecting
a
llO-volt A.C., lS-watt
test
lamp
between
a
clean
part
of the
commutator
and
cover
each of the
springs in
turn;
the lamp
will
light if the insulation
is
not
satisfactory.
BEARINGS
28.
If the bearings
in
the
commutator
end
cover
and
the
drive-end
bracket
are worn
sufciently
to
allow
excessive
side-play of the
armature
shaft,
the bearing
bush
must
be renewed
as
follows:
a.
Support
the
bracket and
drive
out
the bush
using
a
suitable sized mandrel.
b. Using
a
polished, shouldered mandrel,
the
same
diameter
as
the
shaft
bearing journal,
press
the
new
bushes
into
the brackets.
NOTE—New bushes
must
be immersed
in
S.A.E.
30/40
engine
oil
for
24 hours
or
in
oil heated
to
100°
C.
(212°
F.)
for
two
hours
prior
to
tting. The bushes
must not
be
reamed
after tting.
ROLLER CLUTCH DRIVE

Check the
operation
of the drive clutch,
it
should
provide
instantaneous
take—up of the
drive
in
one
direction
and
rotate
easily and smoothly
in
the
other
direction.

Check
that the drive
moves
freely
on
the
armature
splines without
binding
or
sticking.

When
assembling
the
drive-end
bracket
use
a new
retaining
ring
(Spire
nut)
to
secure
the
engagement
lever
pivot
pin.
b.
Ensure
that
the
internal thrust
washer
is
tted
to
the
commutator
end of
the
armature
shaft
before
the
armature
end
cover
is
tted.

Fit
3 new
retaining
ring
(Spire
nut)
onto
the
armature
shaft
to
a
maximum clearance
of
0.010
in.
(0.25
mm.)
between
the
retaining
ring and
the
bearing
bush
shoulder (Armature
end-oat).
Bench
testing

TORQUE

Clamp
the
starter
firmly
in
a
vice.
Connect
a
starter
switch,
a
0—600
amp.
ammeter
and
a
l2-volt
battery
in
series
to
the
starter.
Connect
a
voltmeter between
the
solenoid
two
main
terminals.
Secure
an arm
to
the
driving
pinion.
Connect
a
spring
balance
to
the free
end
of
the
arm.
Operate
the
switch and
note
the
ammeter,
voltmeter,
and
spring
balance
readings.
Calculate the
lock
torque
by
multiplying
the
reading of
the
spring
balance
in
pounds by the
length of
the
arm
in
feet.
