Tie Rod Adjustment
See Figure 7-2.
Figure 7-2
1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-5.)
2. Turn the wheels to the straight-ahead position.
3. Loosen the jam nuts (2) on both sides of the tie rod
(3).
4. Turn the tie rod (3) to provide proper toe-in (1). Toe-in
must not exceed 0.0625 in. (1.6 mm). Retighten the
jam nuts.
5. After adjusting the tie rod, adjust the steering cylinder
by threading the rod (4) in or out of the ball joint so
the spindle arm (6) clears the stop on the axle (6) by
0.50 ± 0.0625 in. (19 ± 1.5 mm) when the cylinder is
fully extended.
NOTE
Equal angle steering should be checked by driving
the unit in a circle in both a hard right and left turn.
Measure the diameter of the tire track circles and
adjust the steering cylinder rod ball joint (described in
step 4) until equal angles are achieved. Tighten the
ball joint lock nut when finished.
