16. While supporting the radiator, remove two screws,
four nuts, and the flat washers from each side of the
radiator. The sheet metal splash guards will fall away
from the radiator mounts.
17. Move the engine-to-frame ground cable to one side.
18. Carefully remove the radiator from the mount.
NOTE
Dispose of waste fluids properly at approved local
recycling centers. If recycling facilities are not available,
contact your local community for the correct disposal
procedure for waste fluids.
Installation Notes
• Install the radiator/hydraulic cooler by reversing the
order of removal.
• Use new ties to assemble the engine oil cooler and
spacers on the outer face of the radiator.
19. With the lower radiator hose removed from radiator,
flush the inside of the radiator with fresh water.
!
CAUTION
20. Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of good quality
ethylene glycol-base antifreeze and clean fresh
water.
21. Install the radiator cap and start the engine following
the instructions in the Safety & Operation manual.
22. When the engine reaches normal operating
temperature, check and fill the coolant reservoir to
the hot full level.

Removal and Installation
See See Figure 3-20.
1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-5.)
2. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key. Allow
the engine to cool completely.
3. Raise the hood.
!
WARNING
4. Drain the cooling system, 8 qt (7.6 L).

5. Loosen hose clamp (1) and remove hose (2).
6. Remove connector (5) from the coolant temperature
sensor (4).
7. Remove two screws (6) and lock washers (7).
8. Remove thermostat housing (3), gasket, and
thermostat.
Installation Notes
• Install the thermostat by reversing the order of
removal.
• Clean gasket surface.
• Use a new gasket during installation.
• Fill the radiator with a 50/50 mixture of good quality
ethylene glycol-base antifreeze and clean fresh
water.
Always use a mixture of antifreeze and fresh
water in the engine cooling system. Normally a
50/50 coolant mixture will provide freeze
protection to 37°F (3°C) and boil-over protection
in an efficient cooling system.
Allow the engine coolant to completely cool
before removing the radiator cap. Hot coolant
sprayed from the cap can cause serious personal
injury.
Engine coolant is hot and under pressure! Allow
the cooling system to cool completely before
performing service.
Rotate the filler cap 1/2 turn counterclockwise
and allow pressure to vent before removing filler
cap.
