Muffler
Removal, Inspection, and Installation
See Figures 3-11 and 3-12.

CAUTION
NOTES
• If a change in the color or sound of the exhaust
occurs, stop the engine immediately, identify the
problem and repair as necessary.
• Tighten all exhaust manifold hardware evenly.

1. Park the mower safely. (See “Park Mower Safely” on
page 1-5.)
2. Stop the engine and remove the ignition key. Allow
the engine to cool completely.
3. Remove the two springs (5) from the muffler/exhaust
pipe (2).
4. Remove the two nuts (3) from the U-bolt (4) securing
the exhaust pipe.
5. Remove the four nuts and bolts (1) securing the
muffler to the exhaust flange.

6. Remove the two bolts (6) securing the muffler to the
engine.
7. Inspect the exhaust system for cracks, holes, and
distortion. Replace exhaust gaskets and tighten or
replace the exhaust clamps.
Installation Notes
• Install the muffler in the reverse order of removal.
• Install new gaskets during installation.
Do not attempt to service the exhaust system
when the engine is hot. Serious personal injury
can occur.
