10-6 Routine Maintenance
To gas-ballast the rotary vacuum pump:
1. On the rotary pump, operate the gas-ballast control.
See also: Figure titled “Rotary pump:” on page 10-5.
2. When the oil is clear return the gas-ballast control to its normal
position.
Checking the rotary pump oil
The oil level can be checked while the pump is operating. However, the
instrument must be vented and shut down before adding oil.
The rotary pump oil level appears in the pump’s oil level sight glass. Check
the oil level at weekly intervals. At all times, it should be at, or near, the MAX
level indicated by the markings beside the sight glass. If oil must be added,
vent and shut down the instrument before removing the oil filler plug.
See also: Figure titled “Rotary pump:” on page 10-5.
Examine the oil each time the oil level is checked. It should be colorless and
free of visible contaminants. If the oil is discolored, change it.
See also: Changing the rotary pump oil on page 10-7.
Warning: To avoid burn injuries, be careful while working with
the rotary pump; it can be hot.
Caution:
Failure to routinely gas-ballast a rotary pump shortens oil life
and consequently shortens pump life.
Do not vent the instrument when a rotary pump is
gas-ballasting.
Do not gas-ballast the rotary pumps while the instrument is
in Operate.
Never gas-ballast a rotary pump for more than 30 minutes.
Warning: To avoid burn injuries, be careful while working with the
rotary pump; it can be hot.
