3-8 Tuning the Instrument
The intensity of the signal is highlighted in the example shown in Figure
titled “Tune window with peak display:” on page 3-7.

Setting up the instrument automatically
Using the Instrument Setup Wizard you can automatically setup the
instrument so that is it ready to be tuned for accurate mass data acquisition.
Required material
The following reference compound solutions are recommended:
• For EI - use heptacosa (218.9856 Da) or FC70 (268.9824 Da)
• For CI positive - use metri (284.9949 Da) or FC70 (268.9824 Da)
• For CI negative - use chloropentafluorobenzene and heptacosa
(413.9775 Da)
• For FI and FD - use chloropentafluorobenzene (201.9609 Da)
To run the Instrument Setup Wizard:
1. In the MassLynx window instrument shortcut menu, click to
open the Tune window.
2. In the Tune window menu bar, click Ion Mode and then click the
required mode.
Note: MassLynx saves tuning parameters separately for each ion mode.
3. Click , to switch the instrument into operate.
4. Use a septum piercing-syringe to inject a suitable reference compound
solution which will produce peaks of a known mass.
Caution: Ensure that the reagent gas is switched off before
running the Instrument Setup wizard in CI positive mode when
using metri as the tuning compound. If FC70 is used, then the
methane reagent gas can be left at the appropriate pressure.
