7-8 The Direct Insertion Probe
7. Wait until the green light in the center of the VAC button illuminates.
Rationale: The light indicates that the inlet pressure has fallen below
the trip level set on the Pirani gauge. If it fails to illuminate check the
insertion lock for leaks and the insertion lock O-ring for damage.
8. Open the probe lock insertion valve.
9. Pull back the spring-loaded probe retaining knob (located on the probe
insertion lock).
10. Slowly push the probe fully in.
11. For CI operation, ensure that the probe is fully in by adjusting the
threaded probe stop-collar.
Rationale: The probe creates a seal that retains the CI gas inside the
inner source.
Removing the DI probe from the probe insertion lock
To remove the probe:
1. On the MassLynx Tune window Inlet tab, set Solids Probe to 20.
2. Wait for the probe to cool.
3. Withdraw the probe to the first stop only.

Caution: Do not leave the DI probe in the retracted position
when not in use. Remove the probe from the instrument.
Warning: The probe is very hot and can cause burn injuries; take
care when withdrawing the probe.
Caution: To avoid damage to its lock seals, allow the probe to cool
below 100 °C before withdrawing it.
Caution: To avoid damage to the instrument, close the probe
insertion lock valve before withdrawing the probe further than
the first stop.
