3-2 Tuning the Instrument
Preparing the instrument for operation
Tuning the instrument for operation requires you to perform certain
procedures. During the tuning procedure the tuning parameters are optimized
so that the optimum resolution and sensitivity can be achieved before
acquiring data.
To prepare the instrument for operation:
1. Ensure that the power is connected to the instrument, and the fore
pump is turned on.
2. Ensure that the gases are connected to the instrument and do not leak.
3. Ensure the gases are set to the following correct pressures:
4. Ensure that the instrument is pumped down (evacuated) with an
analyzer pressure of <3e-6 mbar.
See also: Pumping/venting the instrument on page B-8 and
Pumping/venting the analyzer on page B-7.
5. Ensure that the MCP detector has been conditioned.
See also: Detector maintenance on page 10-50.
6. Ensure that the source is pumped down.
See also: Pumping/venting the source on page B-8.
Gas pressures:
Gas Correct pressure for EI
Correct pressure for CI

Pneumatic gas 80 to 100 psi 80 to 100 psi
Soft vent gas 5 to 100 psi 5 to 100 psi
Helium 90 psi (for GC, if fitted) 90 psi (for GC, if fitted)
