EI/CI outer source maintenance 10-35
EI/CI outer source maintenance
A dirty outer source can cause loss of sensitivity, poor stability, or it can even
affect the resolution of the GCT Premier. As the beam goes through the source
it passes through collimating slits, on the EI/CI outer source, which are only
0.25 mm wide. These slits are the first to get dirty with ion burn.
This section explains the following procedures:
• Removing the outer source from the instrument. See Removing the
EI/CI inner source on page 2-3.
• Cleaning the collimating slits. See Cleaning the collimating slits on
page 10-35.
• Cleaning the complete outer source. See Cleaning the complete outer
source on page 10-37.
• Fitting the outer source to the instrument. See Fitting the EI/CI outer
source to the instrument on page 2-8.
• Checking for leaks after performing source maintenance. See Checking
for leaks after source maintenance on page 10-48.
Cleaning the collimating slits
Cleaning the collimating slits involves removing, cleaning, and refitting them.
To remove the collimating slits:
1. Remove the outer source lid assembly from the instrument.
See also: Removing the EI/CI outer source from the instrument on
page 2-6.
2. Unscrew and remove the screw that secures the collimating slits to the
outer source lid assembly.
