10-12 Routine Maintenance
cast aluminium body. The metal basket is held in place by a knurled nut, a lid,
and a spring.
An absorbent material (activated alumina balls with a strong affinity towards
oil vapor) is contained in the metal basket to absorb any oil that back migrates
from the pump. The life of the alumina balls is typically six months. For most
applications, the alumina should be replaced every three months. During
normal use, the alumina nearest the port connected to the rotary pump
become brown. When the discoloration reaches the alumina balls furthest
from that port, the balls should be replaced.
Required materials
• Chemical-resistant, powder-free gloves
• Isopropyl or ethyl alcohol
• Lint-free cloth
To replace the alumina balls:
1. Vent and shut down the instrument.
See also: Shutting-down the instrument on page A-3.
2. Unscrew the foreline trap lid.
Warning: To avoid burn injuries, be careful while working
with the rotary pump; it can be hot.
Warning: The rotary pump oil can be contaminated with
toxic and biohazardous materials. Wear chemical-resistant,
powder-free gloves at all times while handling the oil, and
ensure that the waste oil is disposed in according to local
environmental regulations.
Warning: To avoid inhaling dust from the activated
alumina, wear a dust mask.
Warning: Take care when removing the foreline trap lid, It is
spring-loaded.
