5. GP6 system functional description
5.5 Firmware
About
The functionality of the projector is bas ed around a FPGA core that realizes all signal-processing, without the need for s eparate
special signal pr ocessing devices. Most of the functionality in the unit is therefore dened in rmware.
To enable a maximum level of freedom to con gure of the system, most functionality of the PCB Main is programm ed through FPGA
housekeeping. Firmware ash is simply performed by saving the updated rmwa re on a USB m emo ry stick and inserting it in the
system’s US B port. When sy stem powers up, it will automatically detect and load the upgrade without more intervention by the user.
System rmware consists of the following param eters, and will load a combination of pre-sets, based on the part number it is named
with, as well as t he color wheel cassette ID it is cur rently equipped with.
New features a nd updated functionality will be released and posted on t he web. It is recomm ended that the system is kept updated
with the latest rmware re le ase.

CW Algorithms
Different color wheels require different timing algorithms to synchronize the DMD against the c olor whe el. These algorithms are
stored in the system. The correct algorithm is automatically selected by the system b ased on the ID of the colorwheel cassette in
use. Please observe that the system has no au tomatic facilities to detect the index timing as this is individual for each and every
colorwheel. Consequently, after replacing the colorwheel, index adjustment must b e performed in the service menu.
5.6 System Safety Loop
System Safety Loop
The projector is equipped with an internal s afety loop ensuring that the system is not damaged if the internal temperature exceeds
normal tem perature range. The s afety loop was introduced as an additional Hardware safety requirement in new projectors around
2010.
The safety loop in GP6 is primarily build up by a c ombination of bimetallic switches, mechanical switches and NTC therm istors.
This system is also known as t hermal loop, designated to monitor each corresponding light path. A total of 5 bimetallic switches
are c onnected in serial within the system. There are two bimetallic switches for each light path and one on the DMD Heatsink (cold
plate).
Bimetal switches are normally closed while in oper ation, but will open when temperature exceeds threshold temperature (90°C).
This loop of bimetallic switches is controlled from the DC Power supply, and if one switch releases the system will power down.
There are also four mechanical switches included in this loop, two at the b ottom cover and two by each Laser cluster detecting they
are in correct position.
Finally there are 12 NTCs, one at each laser bank adjusting the input effect to the lasers, dependent of temperature. If the measured
temperature exceeds 84°C lasers w ill be shut down by the laser drivers.
Each loop can be measured w ith a multimeter in o rder to detect an open circuit in t he loop. This must be
performe d w ith the proj e cto
r switched off / disconnected from the pow er source.
