SEED FIRMING WHEEL
The seed firming wheel pushes the seed to the bottom of
the furrow and helps to ensure good seed-to-soil contact.
Check seed placement routinely and whenever planting
conditions change. Adjustments may be required to the
opener to ensure proper seed placement.
The press wheel places soil over the seed and packs the
seed and soil into the furrow. This eliminates air pockets
and firms the soil around the seed. The down pressure of
the press wheel can be adjusted by using one of three
down pressure spring adjustments based on soil conditions
and seeding depths.
1. Good germination and emergence is promoted by good
seed-to-soil contact. This can be promoted by
maintaining uniform down force on all press wheels.
Low Spring Force Setting: Used for minimum packing
requirements especially in
loose soil conditions.
Middle Spring Force Setting: Used for moderate packing
requirements.
High Spring Force Setting: Used for very firm soil
packing.
2. The position of the press wheel can be adjusted from
directly over the row to 51 mm (2") from the center of
the row.
- The position of the press wheel should be adjusted
for the crop being seeded and soil conditions
encountered.
- Some crops, such as soybean, should not be
packed directly over the seed trench. Compacting
soil directly over a soybean seed can reduce
emergence.
SEED RETENTION TAB
The tab is used to encapsulate the seed into moist soil as
the seed is dropped into the disk furrow. This maintains
proper seed placement and ensures good seed to soil
contact.
Check seed-to-soil contact routinely and whenever
planting conditions change. Replacement of the seed
retention tab may be required to ensure proper seed-to-soil
contact.
