An oil pump, driven by the crankshaft gear, generates
the circulation required to provide lubrication oil to all
lubrication points so that it flows through the oil cleaner
and oil cooler.
The lubricating oil is sucked from the sump through a
strainer in the oil pump.
The oil pressure must be so high as to ensure that
each lubrication point receives the amount of oil
needed for its lubrication and cooling.
Too high oil pressure could cause excessive stress to
components in the lubrication system.
1. Oil pump
Particularly when the oil is cold
there is a risk that the pressure
will be high and for this reason
a safety valve is incorporated in
the oil pump. If the pressure is
too high the oil pressure valve
will allow oil to escape (and run
back to the sump) so that the
pressure will not be so high as
to cause any damage.
