Component hardware troubleshooting 11-13
Leakage between the extraction rods
and the emitter.
Withdraw the emitter by 5 to 10 mm
from the extraction rods.
Remove the ion source, and clean
the extraction rods.

source on page 9-6 and Cleaning the
extraction rods on page 10-42.
Poor sensitivity for reference material (in FI source):
Possible cause Corrective action
Emitter is not intact. Replace the emitter.
Tip: There can be significant varia-
tion between performance of
individual emitters.
Reference reservoir tube has been
bent so that it no longer points at
the emitter.
Check the reference reservior tube.

page 9-20.
Poor GC sensitivity (in FI source):
Possible cause Corrective action
The source end of the column is not
cleanly cut.
Check the position of the emitter
relative to the end of the column and
adjust if required.
See also: Figure titled “GC-FI
column position:” on page 9-20.
Column position not lined up with
the emitter.
Check the position of the emitter
relative to the end of the column and
adjust if required.

column position:” on page 9-20.
